Eating All The Food | Sunderland's Safari Supper Event

I love food. I’d say eating is definitely my favourite hobby, so when I was asked whether I’d like to visit some of Sunderland’s top restaurants, there was no hesitation. To help celebrate in advance of Restaurant Week, which Sunderland Bid are hosting from the 17th to the 25th March 2018, we were invited to have appertisers in one restaurant, starters in another, main courses in another and dessert in yet another! What a concept - I'm definitely going to try this with T on our next date night!

So without further ado, here’s what myself and Danni got up to last week in Sunderland.

Stop One: El Nido.

Location: Frederick Street, Sunderland.

Cuisine: Mexican.

Verdict: Loved this place! It wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea due to the spiciness of the food but it was right up my street. Nestled at basement level on Frederick Street, El Nido offers authentic Mexican food. We got to sample a selection of tostadas which were amazing - my favourite had spicy chicken and pineapple on - a winning combination. El Nido means nest and it’s intimate, cosy atmosphere certainly lived up to its name. I will definitely be back.

Restaurant Week Offer: Starter and a burrito or starter and two taco's for £10. Add a dessert or cocktail for £15.

Stop Two: No2 Church Lane.

Location: Church Lane, Sunderland.

Cuisine: Burgers.

Verdict: 2 Church Lane is handily located opposite the theatre and is a friendly pub specialising in burgers. They put a lot of thought into their pub grub catering for everyone's needs, offering vegetarian and vegan options as well as traditional meat burgers, some with a twist! We tried halloumi fries and spicy risotto balls, as well as a beef burger and a risotto patty burger. Whilst the risotto balls were a little bit greasy for my tastebuds (I mean, it didn't stop me eating my share), the burgers and fries were to die for. The normal fries were amazing but then the fries with chilli and cheese on were just something else. I had to stop myself getting carried away as this location was just for starters! I would definitely recommend No2 Church Lane if you fancy a night of beers and burgers.

Restaurant Week Offer: Burger and fries for £5, 2 courses for £10 or 3 courses for £15

Stop Three: The Engine Room.

Location: High Street West, Sunderland.

Cuisine: Good quality pub grub.

Verdict: I can’t even tell you much about the food from The Engine Room as I was too blown away by the interiors in here. The venue is an old fire station which has had a multi million pound refurbishment to turn it into a restaurant. With the original fire station sign inside,  fire buckets dotted around the walls and an industrial, raw feel, The Engine Room is so much more than just a place to eat. Despite this, the food is still top notch - The Engine Room prides itself on delivering the best quality pub style food. I tried a sample of the fish and chips and a vegan burger, washed down with a Pornstar Martini sorbet - need I say more really?! This place is a must!!

Restaurant Week Offer: 3 courses for £15

Stop Four: The Peacock.

Location: High Street West, Sunderland.

Cuisine: Pub grub.

Verdict: So after mountains of food in the first three restaurants, The Peacock had the very difficult job of providing the last course of dessert to a group of very full bloggers. Providing chocolate brownies with Jaffa cake ice cream, carrot cake cheesecake and my favourite, cherry bakewell pudding, The Peacock excelled. I actually somehow managed to eat all of this because it was just so amazing. With live music on a Saturday night and only a short walk to the theatre, this is a perfect place for a fun night out.

Restaurant Week Offer: 3 courses for £15.

I would definitely recommend getting involved in Sunderland's Restaurant Week and trying one (or maybe two) of these amazing places. To download vouchers for £5, £10 and £15 offers click here

Have you tried any of these Sunderland restaurants?
